Couple arrested for possession of cannabis and pistol [1]

A couple from Tokomololo were arrested for possession of cannabis, one pistol and over $500 pa'anga cash after they were chased and stopped by Tonga Police in their car early Thursday morning, February 9 at Fo’ui.
Two Police Officers from the Nukunuku Police Station got suspicious when a car with a taxi registration plate and tinted windows was speeding on Hihifo Road in Kolovai. The officers chased and stopped the car.
The officers searched the car and found 26 packets of cannabis (248.57grams), one pistol, two .22 ammunition and more than $500 cash.
The couple in their mid-20s were arrested at around 7:30 am and both have been charged with possession of illicit drugs. The husband faces additional charges of possession of firearm and ammunition without a license.
Deputy Commissioner Pelenatita Vaisuai said today the swift and timely response by these two police officers had helped to ensure public safety. "It`s great that further drugs and an illegal firearm have been removed from our community where they may cause harm to others."
Both accused are remanded in custody to appear at the Magistrate's Court on Thursday, February 16.
