A Vote of No Confidence in the Prime Minister and his Cabinet was handed out by the Speaker, Lord Tu’ivakano, to the Tongan Parliament  this afternoon before the House closed today at 4:00pm.

The Prime Minister Hon. 'Akilisi Pohiva was not in Parliament, but Lord Tu’ivakano said that the PM may respond to the Vote of No confidence between now and next Monday. The House will be dealing with the motion on Monday, 20 February.

He said that five working days have been allocated for the House to deal with the Vote of No Confidence in the Prime Minister and his Cabinet, so that is all of next week as well as Monday, 27 February.

18 months

The quest for a Vote of No Confidence in the Prime Minister Hon. 'Akilisi Pohiva and his government has been in the air since his government took office at the end of 2014.

A Vote of No Confidence may be tabled into Parliament by Members of the Legislative Assembly, only after 18 months has passed since a General Election.

The motion was received by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Lord Tu’ivakano, on February 2. It still has not been revealed who filed the motion.

Gloria Pole'o, the Clerk of the House, said this afternoon that the motion will be tabled on 20 February but it was distributed today.
