The Tonga Breast Cancer Society received a donation of USD$600 from India's High Commissioner to Tonga HE Mr Vishvas Vidu Sapkal on Wednesday, February 8 in Nuku'alofa.
TBCS President Hon Frederica Tuita-Filipe thanked the High Commissioner for the donation that would greatly assist their awareness programs to coincide with their 10th anniversary this year.
HE Mr Sapkal said he was happy to make the donation on behalf of the Indian Government because Tonga Breast Cancer is doing a wonderful job in helping people be more aware of this disease. "Human life is precious and what you are doing is a noble cause," he said.
Every year, "Pink October" is breast cancer awareness month in Tonga. The society holds national radio and television programs inviting medical experts to speak on the importance of self-examination and seeking medical treatment at the earliest opportunity if one detects to have a lump, because early treatment saves lives.
There are also other outreach and fundraising programs held every October.
The High Commissionerwas visiting Tonga to present his credentials to HM King Tupou VI at the Royal Palace, earlier in the day.
