Man arrested for helping escaped prisoners [1]

A 47-year old man from Ha’avakatolo has been arrested and charged in relation to his role in helping two escaped prisoners while they were on the run in Tongatapu earlier this week. The prisoners were recaptured on February 1-2.

The accused had allegedly drove Viliami Kupu and ‘Amoni Fifita to and from a shop in Kolovai which they allegedly robbed at gunpoint, after escaping police custody on 31 January.

He has been charged with conspiracy and abetment of crime and is remanded in police custody to appear at the Fasi Magistrate's Court on Thursday, February 9.

The police from the Nukunuku District Station made the arrest.
