Thirteen people were arrested and charged for alleged drunk driving, disorderly behaviour and drinking in public places, mainly in Central Nuku’alofa, over the weekend from January 27-29, in Operation Safe Streets to prevent alcohol-fueled crimes in Tongatapu. 

This is a slight increase from seven arrests made the previous weekend from January 20-22.

The arrests made last weekend were mainly in the Central Nuku’alofa area. The seven recorded the previous weekend were six in Nuku’alofa and one in Mu’a.

Police will continue to patrol the weekends to continue preventing alcohol fuelled crimes, said a police spokesperson.

The operation which began in July last year had arrested and charged more than 600 people, as police patrol roads and respond to complaints from the community on any drunken crimes or behaviour.
