Australian-Tongan teens take action against rampaging driver in Melbourne

Two Australian-Tongan teenagers, Tevita Mahina (17) and Issac Tupou (17), are being commended by the Australian public for their attempts to stop a crazed man Dimitrious Gargasoulas who killed five pedestrians in a driving rampage in Melbourne, last Friday January 20.

Tevita and Issac gained media attention after footage revealed the two cousins attempting to stop a 26-year-old driver Dimitrious Gargasoulas. Isaac told Australia 9 news “We saw him doing doughnuts and screaming to the crowd and in that moment, I knew he was going to inflict pain or was going to harm someone,”

“So I turned to my cousin and took action because no-one was doing anything”.

The footage showed Tevita swinging a baseball bat at the vehicle of Dimitrious as he was swerving around the intersection before driving down a sidewalk injuring dozens of pedestrians and killing five.

Tevita said “The car came at us then I stepped to the side and swung the bat...Then he came back and chased us off".

Both cousins have expressed their sympathy for the victims and have brushed aside compliments for their actions.

Tevita told the Australian Daily Mail "I didn't save anyone so I don't feel like a hero,"

"I wish I could have stopped him, look at the five who have passed away I hope their loved ones are ok and they will be in my prayers."

Tributes and memorial services are being held for the victims, among whom included a 3-month old baby boy and 10-year-old girl Thalia Hakin.
