Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Friday, January 20, 2017 - 22:52

Eleven people were arrested and charged for alleged drunk driving, disorderly behaviour and drinking in public places, in Central Nuku’alofa last weekend January 13-15, in Operation Safe Streets to prevent alcohol-fueled crimes in Tongatapu.

Police said 39 were arrested in Central Nuku'alofa and three in Nukunuku. This is a decrease from 42 persons that were arrested and charged in the first weekend of the New Year, January 6-8.

"Tonga Police will continue to patrol the roads during weekends to continue preventing alcohol fuelled crimes," said a police spokesperson today.

No fatalities were recorded.

Operation Safe Streets, which began in the last week of July last year had, up to December, arrested and charged more than 600 people.
