Liahona High School of the LDS church won the most medals at the 2006 Tonga Inter-Collegiate Athletic Sports Competition.

During the four day-sports events over 20 new records were set in both track and field events.

Liahona won 38 gold, 25 silver and 17 bronze medals, and it was the second year in a row the school had won the most medals the competition.

Tailulu College came in second place with 21 gold, 21 silver, 10 bronze medals; and Tonga High School in third place with 17 gold, 16 silver and 5 bronze medals.

The sports competition began on April 19 and was initially scheduled for three days but due to heavy rain on Friday April 21 the competition was further postponed to a fourth day on Monday April 24.

Track events held on the last day of April 24 were the finals in the 100m, 200m, 800m and the 4x100m relay in both the Girls and Boys midget grade, junior, intermediate, open and senior grades. Field events finals were also held for the javelin, discuss, triple jump, high jump and the discus throwing.

At the closing ceremony of the sports competition certificates and special medals were awarded to new record breakers and the best athlete in each grade.

New Records

Some of the new record breakers included Vasi Feke of Tonga High School who set a new record of 28.91 sec breaking last year...’s record of 31.12 sec in the Junior Girls 200m hurdles.

In the Long Jump of the Junior Girls Naite Koloi of Liahona High School set a new record of 5.02m breaking last year...’s record jump of 4.90m.

In the shot put of the Intermediate Girls Siloni Koloa of Queen Salote College set a new record of 11.35 m overcoming last year...’s 11.30m.

In the 400m for the Intermediate Girls Sepi Tu...’anekai of Tailulu College set a new record of 1min.1 sec breaking last year...’s record of 1min.3 sec.

And William Magoon of Liahona High School also set a new record of 22.07 sec breaking last year...’s record of 22.36 sec in the 200m dash.
