Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Tuesday, December 13, 2016 - 23:01.  Updated on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 - 23:03.

A father and son from 'Eua, missing at sea in a small boat since Saturday, were rescued this afternoon by the HMAF VOEA Pangai, after being located in an aerial search conduced by a RNZAF (Royal New Zealand Air Force) P3K2 Orion today.

Sifa Pepa (40), and his son Tevita Pepa (14) were located alive and are on their way back home after a three days ordeal drifting in the open sea, after the motor on their small fishing boat failed on Saturday.

“I am happy that we can return Sifa and his son Tevita to their loved ones for Christmas.” said Tonga Police Commissioner Steve Caldwell this evening.

Tonga Police requested assistance from the Rescue Co-Ordination Centre New Zealand for an aerial search, which was conducted by a P3K2 Orion at around 1:00pm this afternoon,13 December.

"They located the missing boat at approximately 2:00pm at Hunga Tonga and HMAF VOEA Pangai was deployed at 2:30pm with two Police Officers on board to pick them up," he said.

The VOEA Pangai was expected to return to Nuku'alofa this evening with Sifa and his son Tevita, and their family had been advised.

Commissioner Caldwell acknowledged the RCCNZ and RNZAF for their assistance. “Their quick and professional response was overwhelming, and I pass on my heartfelt thanks, as well as from the family.”

“We also want to thank HMAF for their valuable assistance, and local fishermen who assisted in the initial sea search. We also appreciate the great work of the MET Office and Coastal Radio.”

Since the launch of three new police SAR boats in December 2015, police have saved 67 lives, from 20 Police SAR operations.

Police Commissioner Caldwell said it was important for boat owners to take precautions and safety measures. "Before embarking on their voyages they must make sure that they have a communication means, life jacket, emergency flares and a beacon," he said.
