Tonga joins Int'l Organization for Migration [1]

Tonga has become the 166th member state of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) this month.
It is the 11th Pacific Island to join this leading inter-governmental organization, headquartered in Switzerland. The IOM provides services and advice regarding migration to governments and migrants including refugees, displaced persons and migrant workers, with .
The organisation is committed to ensure the orderly and humane management of migration to promote international cooperation on migration issues, to assist in the search for practical solutions to migration problems and provide humanitarian assistance to migrants in need, including refugees and internally displaced people,
IOM states it works in four broad areas of migration management from migration and development, facilitating migration, regulating migration to forced migration.
Established in 1951, IOM activities in these areas includes the promotion of international migration law, policy debate and guidance, protection of migrants' rights, migration health and the gender dimension of migration.
