Child remains missing in Ha'afeva [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Wednesday, December 7, 2016 - 17:24

A three-year old boy who fell overboard from a small boat in Ha’afeva early Saturday morning, December 3 remains missing at sea, and presumed drowned.

A police spokesperson said the child was among about six people sitting on top of the cabin of a small boat, including his parents and five-year-old sister.

Their small boat from ‘O’ua had set sail to meet the MV Otuanga’ofa ferry, which was berthed in the deep water since it could not anchor at the wharf.

It was still dark as the small boat approached the ferry. It is alleged that boat collided with the loading end of the ferry and capsized causing everyone on the small boat to fall into the sea at around 5:07 am. Those at the scene rescued the victim’s sister and others, while the victim could not be found, she said.

A Police Search and Rescue boat, MV 'Amolua continued the search for the missing boy. Police have not yet released the name of the victim and his family.
