Arrests in Operation Safe Streets [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Wednesday, November 9, 2016 - 18:10.  Updated on Friday, November 11, 2016 - 10:38.

Twenty-two people were arrested and charged for alleged drunk driving, being disorderly and drinking in public places, mainly in central Nuku’alofa, over the weekend, during Operation Safe Streets aimed at preventing alcohol fueled crimes in Tongatapu.

The number of arrests remained the same as the 22 arrested over the previous weekend for similar offences.

The operation continues and police officers would remain visible in targeted main areas of the Central Business District and throughout Tongatapu, during the weekends, said a police spokesperson today.

Last weekend 20 were arrested in Nuku’alofa and two in the Nukunuku area. The numbers have been lower over the past few weekends in comparison to when the operation first began.

There were no road fatalities, said the spokesperson.

Since the operation began in July, more than 500 people have been arrested and charged with drunk driving, disorderly conduct and drinking alcohol in public places.
