Tonga nobles to hold by-election March 30 [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Wednesday, March 29, 2006 - 17:56.  Updated on Monday, May 12, 2014 - 23:53.

The nobles of Tongatapu and Vava'u will hold a by-election tomorrow, to choose their new noble's representatives to the Tongan parliament.

The by-election will allow Tongatapu nobles to elect one representative to take the parliamentary seat of the late Hon. 'Ahome'e who died last month, and the nobles of Vava'u to elect a representative to take over the seat of Noble Veikune, who was stripped of his noble title and lost his seat in the House after he was found guilty of bribery charges in the Supreme Court on January 25.

The one candidate who can easily take either one of these nobles seats is the former Prime Minister, Prince 'Ulukalala Lavaka Ata, with 'Ulukalala - Vava'u, or Tongatapu - Lavaka Ata estates.

Pita Vuki, the Supervisor for Election confirmed today that 16 nobles will be voting in Tongatapu and eight in Vava'u.

The Tongatapu nobles who will vote tomorrow are 'Ahome'e, Ata, Fakafanua, Fielakepa, Fohe, Kalaniuvalu, Lasike, Lavaka, Ma'afu, Nuku, Tungi, Tu'ipelehake, Tu'ivakano, Vaea, Vaha'i and Ve'ehala.

For Vava'u they include Fakatulolo, Fulivai, Luani, Tu'i'afitu, Tu'ilakepa, Tuita, 'Ulukalala and Veikune.

The most likely nobles to take the noble's Tongatapu seat are Lavaka Ata, Kalaniuvalu, or Vaha'i. From Vava'u it could be either, 'Ulukalala, Fulivai or Veikune.
