Low demand as MV Maggie Cat services outer islands [1]

The MV Maggie Cat's new inter-island ferry which can carry 260 passengers to Vava’u and Ha’apai has made three trips so far since it began on 31 August, but none has been full due to low demand.
 
The 29 meters aluminum catamaran charted for three-months by the Friendly Islands Shipping Agency Ltd. from the Captain Cooks Cruises of Australia can sail at a top speed of 20 nautical miles an hour was launched in Nuku’alofa on 30 August.

The Chief Executive Officer of FISA, Mosese Fakatou said today MV Maggie Cat has had three trips but none has been full because the demand is not so big now. We have had only around 100 passengers on each of the trips we have done. The service is progressing well, he said.

The ferry is currently in the outer islands to return to the capital this week before sailing again next week.

Mosese said they have not yet set a confirmed timetable for this service. May be next week we will announce its confirmed timetable but we hope to have at least two services a week to Vava’u and Ha’apai. If there is more demand then we will increase our service, he said.

MV Maggie Cat allows each passenger a luggage allocation of 15kg.

Meanwhile, the MV ‘Otuanga’ofa which remain docked in Nuku'alofa is expected to get its rudder repaired in Fiji later this month.

The inter-island ferry is still on schedule to resume its normal inter-island service in October after repairs, said Mosese.
