Tonga's Prime Minister Hon ‘Akilisi Pohiva and his delegation are attending meetings including the 10th Pacific Island Conference of Leaders in Honolulu from August 30 to September 1. He is also expected to attend the 47th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Pohnpei next week.

The PM attended the meeting of leaders from 20 Pacific Islands at the East West Centre on the theme, 'Enhancing Sustainability in our Pacific Islands: Collective Action for our Shared Future.'

The Conference discussed key issues of importance to the region’s security, climate change and regional cooperation.

U.S Present Barack Obama spoke to Pacific Leaders and stressed the importance of addressing the dangers of climate change.

Held every three-years, this meeting also seeks to strengthen Pacific Islands-US relations, while enhancing engagements with the US in addressing illegal fishing, maritime security and climate change challenges.

Tonga's delegation includes Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni, Chief Secretary and Secretary to Cabinet Dr. Palenitina Langa’oi and CEO for Meteorology, Environment, Information, Disaster Management Energy, Climate Change and Communications, Paula Ma'u

The PM also attended the Pacific Islands Coalition for West Papua (PICWP) on 2 September.

He is expected to lead Tonga’s delegation to the 47th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting that starts on September 7-11 at Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia.

In the meantime in Nuku'alofa, Parliament's sitting has been adjourned to resume on 3 October.
