Tuesday, August 9, 2016 - 17:29

Tonga Police are looking for a burglar who was reported to have broken into one of the homes situated inside the New Zealand High Commissioner’s compound in broad daylight on Monday, 8 August at Popua.

The break-in occured after 10:00am when the burgular allegedly stole some items.

Police suspect the burglar is a young man, probably in his late teens, who was wearing knee length black shorts, black and white t-shirt, his head covered with a black cloth and was allegedly carrying a kitchen knife.

Police said they are making positive enquries because they believe this incident is part of a number of daylight burglaries that have been occurring in the area for several weeks now.

Deputy Commissioner Pelenatita Fe'ao Vaisuai said there has been a recent increase in burglaries in Fangaloto and neighbouring villages with cash, jewelry, mobile phones, laptops and Tongan mats stolen.

She advised home owners to ensure their homes are locked up. "Police would like to remind the community to report any suspicious behaviour to 922 or 26494," she said.
