Tonga’s Prime Minister Hon ‘Akilisi Pohiva will meet  New Zealand's Prime Minister Rt Hon John Key on Thursday 28 July, during his first bilateral visit to New Zealand from July 27-30.

In a statement, PM Pohiva said he is deeply grateful for the invitation from the Prime Minister of New Zealand to visit and officially meet him.

He said this is an important visit for the government and the people of Tonga as it demonstrates the close, strong relationship and friendship already shared by the two countries.

“The visit will also provide invaluable opportunities to discuss with New Zealand leaders areas of shared interests to Tonga and New Zealand for future collaboration and cooperation. New Zealand has been one of the major development partners for Tonga in many ways for many years, evident throughout Tonga so this visit will build on that partnership and to the future."

PM Pohiva who left Tonga today, is expected to attend a wreath laying ceremony at the Auckland War Memorial Museum and meet with Cabinet Ministers and government officials, as well the Tongan community in Auckland.

Also on the trip is the Minster for Public Enterprises Hon Poasi Tei, Minister for Revenue and Customs Hon Tevita Lavemaau, Lord Vaea Tongatapu No. 1 Noble MP, Chief Secretary and Secretary to Cabinet Dr Palenitina Langa’oi and Secretary for Foreign Affairs Va’inga Tone.
