Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Thursday, July 15, 2004 - 15:30.  Updated on Sunday, May 11, 2014 - 11:10.

The Government of Japan continues to support Tonga's education sector with the completion of two further projects funded under Japan's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects. The grants are a part of an initiative by the Government of Japan, to provide funding to 100 schools in the South Pacific Forum Island Countries over the next three years, announced at the Japan-Pacific Island Leaders Meeting held in May 2003 at Okinawa in Japan.

On Thursday, 15 July 2004, JICA's Resident Representative, Mr Mitsuo Ishikawa was to hand over four toilet units valued at US$8,201(approx. TOP$16,240) to the Nukuleka Government Primary School. It is believed that such facility is vital for children to practice a healthy lifestyle and cleanliness.

On Saturday, 17 July 2004, Mr Kenji Miyata, Minister Counselor from the Embassy of Japan in Suva, will officially open the first Government Primary School for Hala'ovave. The construction of this new school consisted two phases. Phase I was during the fiscal year 2002 which consisted of 6 classrooms, 5000gl rain water tank and 4 toilet units which amounted to US$73,120 (approx. TOP$144,792). Phase 2 was implemented during the fiscal year 2003 and consisted 1 staff quarter, a play ground and fence which totaled to US$81,391 (approx. TOP$161,170). This brings the grand total for the Hala'ovave GPS Project to US$154,511 (approx. TOP$305,962). Hala'ovave children will indeed benefit from this Project as they do not have to go all the way to Kolomotu'a or Longolongo for they have the nearest primary schools. - JICA
