Couple charged with ANZ Tonga bank theft [1]

A former ANZ Bank employee and her husband have been charged with stealing $300,000 from the ANZ Bank in Tonga.

Former bank clerk, Fotolina Fonua Tonga, and her husband Kusitafu Tonga, a former national rugby player, appeared in the Nuku'alofa Magistrate's court on February 20 charged with theft and forgery of over $300,000 from the ANZ Nukuk'alofa branch.

Fotolina is charged with four counts of forging and falsifying official documents and theft while Kusitafu is charged with two counts of forging official documents and theft.

Police Magistrate Peau Pifeleti who presided over the hearing today postponed the preliminary inquiry to begin on March 21, 2006 at the Nuku'alofa Magistrate's court.

William Clive Edwards was the legal counsel for the two accused.
