A 39-year-old-year wife and mother of 10 children has been charged in relation to hitting her husband (45) on the head with a piece of wood on Monday, 27 June. He remains hospitalized.

Chief Superintendent Tevita Fifita said this afternoon the accused is charged with one count of grievous bodily harm.

He said the incident took place early Monday morning during an altercation between the couple, both of whom were allegedly intoxicated with alcohol at a home in Popua.

They were brought into custody at the Central Police Station to sober up. When they were about to be released on that afternoon the husband asked police to take him to Vaiola Hospital because he was not feeling well.

When he was admitted to hospital he reported that the wife had allegedly hit him on the head with a piece of wood. There were no injuries visible but doctor confirmed that he was injured, he said.

The husband is expected to get treatment with possible surgery on Saturday, 2 July.

The wife who has been in custody since Monday, was expected to appear at the Nuku’alofa Magistrate’s Court today.

The couple is reported to have 10 children, said Superintendent Fifita.
