Man charged with attack on NZ woman [1]

A 20-year-old man from Sopu has been charged in relation to an alleged attack on a 21-year-old New Zealand woman on Saturday afternoon, 21 May at the ‘Atenisi Institute compound in Kolomotu’a.

The accused who was charged with causing serious bodily harm on Sunday, 22 May is expected to appear at the Nukualofa Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, 31 May.

The young woman, who did not know the accused was hospitalised as a result of the attack. She has been released from Vaiola Hospital.

Police Commissioner Steve Caldwell said this is a shocking attack and reassured the community this is an isolated incident and they are offering their full support to the victim and her family.

The accused remains in police custody until his appearance at the lower court. 

He said other serious charges are pending and the matter is now before the courts.
