Two men were arrested and charged this morning in relation to two separate robberies at a beach resort and a home in Tongatapu, over the weekend.

Chief Superintendent Tevita Fifita said today the accused aged 24 and 18 years, both from Fangaloto, were arrested by police in Nuku'alofa.

They appeared at the Nuku'alofa Magistrate's Court today charged with housebreaking, theft and abetment.

He said they were further detained in custody as investigation continues and the Police expected to lay more charges against them.

The accused are alleged to have first stolen a vehicle at a home in Fangaloto on Saturday night, 14 May. They are also alleged to have broken into the Vakaloa Beach Resort in the Western district at around 4:00am on Sunday, 15 May.

They are alleged to have stolen more than $100 cash and cigarettes but were caught on security camera.

The vehicle was found ditched at Popua on Monday, 18 May. They are expected to re-appear at the lower court next week.

Chief Supt. Fifita said Police were also investingating an incident where two men tried to snatch a woman's purse at Nukunuku at around 2:00am, also on Sunday morning. The woman resisted and held onto her purse and the would-be robbers fled in a vehicle, he said.
