Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Tuesday, April 26, 2016 - 10:27

The body of a missing New Zealand visitor Gregory Reynolds was found in a dense bush area close to the Liku’alofa Beach Resort in Tongatapu on Sunday, 24 April.

Police Commissioner Steve Caldwell confirmed today that the remains have been identified as the 47-year-old man who had been missing since 8 April.

His family in New Zealand has been advised.

Mr Reynolds, a guest at Liku’alofa Resort on the western side of Tongatapu, was last seen on the morning of Thursday, 7 April - the same day as Tropical Cyclone Zena was in the region.

He was reported missing to the police on Friday, 8 April, when he failed to report for his courtesy van transfer to the airport.

Tonga Police stated that this led to extensive land searches with the assistance of His Majesty’s Armed Forces and community volunteers, as well as coastal searches using the police and search and rescue vessel, MV ‘Alotolu. The search was suspended on Thursday, 21 April, when the Police stated they were satisfied there were no suspicious circumstances.

Today, the Police Commissioner said no further details will be released at this stage, and an investigation is continuing.
