Ocean of Light grows into High School [1]

Nuku‘alofa, Tonga

Saturday, November 30, 2002 - 09:00.  Updated on Thursday, February 18, 2016 - 19:02.

From Matangi Tonga Magazine Vol. 17, no. 3, November 2002.

The Ocean of Light International School  will move to a newly built complex on the western outskirts of Nuku‘alofa next year.

The expanded school, which is owned and managed by the Ocean of Light Education Trust, will provide education ranging from Prep Schools to a Form 6 High School. Robert Bolouri, a trustee, said that when the school opens next year they would be able to take in about 260 pupils, but already some of the classes were already fully booked until 2004.

Robert said that with an initial investment of $1.3 million pa‘anga the school would open the essential two large buildings, housing 22 class rooms and two offices, and the rest of the amenities would follow later.

The school started six years ago with a primary school and a middle school, but Robert said that they soon realised that they would have to expand to meet the demand. The fact that Tonga High School could offer only a limited number of vacancies annually, meant that their students were left stranded with no other school to go to.

The main attraction for parents to send their children to the Ocean of Light is because the teaching is carried out in English and they have Canadian and American teachers. Robert said that at the new complex some conversational Tongan would also be taught.

In the near future Robert said that they would like to introduce vocational training.
