Hon. Fane Tupou Vava‘u pours cement on the new academy grounds.

If money talks, then what professional sports people are saying these days is that soccer will replace rugby as Tonga’s national sport in the near future.

The construction of a $1.2 million Sports Academy by the Tonga Football Association, is a commitment that no other sport, even rugby, which has been in Tonga for 79 years, could match. The funding for the new academy has come from the Federation of International Football Association, whose development officer, Glenn Turner, attended a dedication held at the site on October 29.

The start of construction was officially marked by Hon. Fane Tupou Vava‘u Tuita, a grand-daughter of King Taufa‘ahau Tupou IV, who is the Patron of the Tonga Football Association.

The new academy is to be built on a 24 acres, near Veitongo, that was donated by the King. It  will consist of classrooms, dormitories, a gymnasium, the TFA offices, and four soccer fields. The architectural work was carried out by Jamie and Associates. The construction by Moala Friendly Islands Construction is expected to be completed by July next year.
