A 23-year-old man has been charged with the death of Liufau Taufa whom he allegedly ran over with his vehicle in a hit and run road accident on Saturday night, 13 February at Vaololoa.

Tonga Police said today Liufau (26) died at the scene. He lived at Hala'ovave but was orginally from Vava'u.

The accused driver from Tofoa is alleged to have been speeding. The victim was on foot on Vaha’akolo Road in front of the Maamaloa Side School. The accused driver did not stop to help and allegedly fled leaving the victim on the road. Other people who found the victim called the ambulance.

The driver later turned himself in to police on Sunday, 14 February and was charged with reckless driving causing death. He remains in custody to appear at the Nuku'alofa Magistrate's Court on Friday, 19 February.
