Mr Andrew Ford has been appointed the new Australian High Commissioner Designate for Tonga.

“I look forward to building on Tonga and Australia’s close and broad partnership,” said Mr Ford, in a statement today.

Mr Ford works in Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, where he was recently Director of the Free Trade Agreement Policy and New Issues, and Director of areas responsible for Trade Competitiveness, International Economics and Finance, Trade Policy, and Security Policy and Operations.

He previously served overseas as Counsellor (Political and Economic) in Kuala Lumpur and as First Secretary (Economic) in Seoul.

Australia supports Tonga through the Australian Aid Program, Tonga Police Development Program, Defence Cooperation Program and initiatives to promote trade and labour mobility in the Pacific.

Mr Ford will present his credentials to His Majesty King Tupou VI later in February.
