Bob Gillett. Nuku‘alofa. April 1999

Bob Gillett, a World Bank consultant, visited Tonga at the end of April to brief the Ministry of Fisheries and the Environment Unit of the Ministry of Land on the result of a coastal resources study that he carried out in six Tongan villages last year.

Bob said that the objective of the study was to determine the best way to manage coastal resources, which he said are depleting at an alarming rate due to over-harvesting, dynamiting and the poisoning of fish in the zone between the shoreline and the outer reefs.

The six villages Bob studied were Koulo, Lofanga, Falevai, Tu‘anekivale, Nukuhetulu and Ha‘atafu. He interviewed over 150 people from a cross section of these communities, and said that a final report of his study would be released in June.

The Tongan study was part of a regional program that was funded by the World Bank and it covered five Pacific Island states, Tonga, Fiji, Samoa, Solomon Islands and Palau.
