Toki Ukamea?

Re: the world has moved on! [2]

Dear Editor,

This forum has been a source of inspirational and stimulating discussions that added scholarly and intellectual dimensions to the journalism of Matangi Tonga. Unfortunately, William Mariner chose not to add any real value to any topic of any kind, but chose to take personal attacks against Dr. Mahina on his previous post.

There is nothing worse than having mediocre minds engage in valuable discussions because they will add nothing and resort to abusive language as this so call William Mariner. Sir, if you are indeed the name sake of the great Toki Ukamea, then please try to contribute to the Tongan literature as he has done, not discourage it.

I have read the literarily work of the real Port au Prince ship clerk and I do not recall ever reading that Toki Ukamea left behind any posterity in Vava'u when he fled from Finau 'Ulukalala, or anywhere else in Tonga when he traveled with 'Ulukalala on their war campaigns. Correct me sir if I am wrong, but if he ever had any romances in Tonga, he hid it pretty well because he never discussed it in his journal.

So, the only way that you can have your name would be upon Mr. Mariner's return back to England, which makes you full palangi. However, you caught my attention this time around; I went back and read your previous writings on this forum. Everything about your writing tells me that you are Tongan to the bone with insights of only someone that grew up in Tonga. Who exactly are you? And where are you from? This is common practice in our Tongan culture typical in kava circle discussions since you claim the name, if you know what I mean.

Koau ANGAKEHE meihe Ongoha...‚angana, fakatau mai! Kapau 'oku ke fehu...‚ia au pea ke 'eke ki he Tamafoa tene ilo au. Fakahoko mai koe kataki ketau fe'ilongaki! Pea kapau ko TOKI UKAMEA koe, kataki atu. Kake eiki pe mo famatala ke vave!

'Ofa atu,
