Sky Pacific and Radio Australia FM103 launch in Tonga [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Monday, November 21, 2005 - 17:57.  Updated on Saturday, May 10, 2014 - 18:11.

Two new services Sky Pacific Television and Radio Australia...’s FM 103 were launched in Nuku'alofa today in a partnership with the Tonga Broadcasting Commission (TBC).

'Elenoa '‘Amanaki, the General Manager for TBC, said that today they were marking two milestones with the two projects ...— Sky Pacific...’s 12 pay to view channels and a 24 hours FM station from Radio Australia.

TBC was established in 1961 with one AM radio station. In 2005 it has one AM station, two FM stations, 12 channels pay to view television and one free to air Television Tonga. In 2006 an 18-hour Central China television is hoped to be implemented.

'‘Elenoa added TBC will become the sole distributor of Sky Pacific in Tonga and will be a reseller of their channels and equipment in Tonga.

The reason why we went with Sky Pacific is because Fiji TV has got rights to the World Cup Soccer and soon Rugby World Cup and it is also negotiating to include the 2007 South Pacific Games in Samoa and the 2007 World Netball Championship.

Sky Pacific can also reach the outer islands, she said.

Mr. Ken Clarke CEO of Fiji TV said that they are introducing a satellite delivered package of digital television services to Tonga for the first time.

Ken said that today may be small but they expect tomorrow could loom very large on the Pacific Broadcasting horizon. "Our view is that the introduction today could not only provide programming from other parts of the world for Tonga but also present the way for Pacific Island nations to communicate with one another in a cost effective way".

The FM 103 of Radio Australia project involves transmitting Radio Australia programs and it donates to TV Tonga and FM 90 as well as providing equipments.

Hon. Fanetupouvava'u Tuita switched the two new services today.
