Beryl Wolff encourages people in Tonga to wear sunglasses to protect their eyes. “Pacific islands have a high incidence of sun-related eye disease caused by exposure to UV rays,” she said.
Beryl lost the sight in one eye in a sports accident when she was young and later lost the sight in the other after catching a rare eye infection. She was blind until surgeons reconstructed one of her eyes using donated tissue from the P.B.F. eye bank in Australia. “Today I can see again thanks to generous organ donors, the P.B.F. and the wonderful surgical skills of Prof. Laurie Hirst in Queensland,” she said. “I now help in fund-raising and try to create public awareness.”
Beryl enjoyed painting flowers andocean scenes whilewas in Tonga with her husband Arnold recently. He is, an AESOP volunteer and computer accountancy consultant, who was helping a number of companies in Nuku‘alofa to set up new computer accounting systems, including the Vava‘u Press Ltd., and Steve Edwards’ group of companies.
