Tonga’s Valamotu Palu is the new general secretary of the Pacific Council of Churches. She was elected to her new position during the Pacific Council of Churches Executive Committee meeting in Nuku‘alofa in October.
Valamotu has been the acting general secretary prior to the appointment, and is the second woman to hold the post. She is taking over at a time when a number of major structural changes are being introduced to the PCC.
She said the restructuring of the PCC aimed at allowing the National Council of Churches to set their own working program, a move away from the old practice where PCC set up a working programme for all national councils of churches in the region. The staff of the PCC which is based in Suva, will be reduced from 19 to 7.
