Tonga civil service has been given a 5% pay increase back dated to 1 July 2015.
In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said that Cabinet, on Friday 27 November 2015 approved a 5% Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) award for the public service to be based on the existing salary structure for the public service. It is back dated to be effective from 1 July 2015 and to be paid to the public service employees before the Government closes down for the Christmas break for 2015.
“This 5% COLA is an interim measure, as Cabinet is still working with the Public Service Commission and the Remuneration Authority to establish and implement transitioning the public service into a new public service salary structure, which is anticipated to be completed and implemented early next year, 2016,” the Prime Minister’s Office stated.
The Ministry of Finance and National Planning is expected to implement the Cabinet directive before the government closes from December 22 to 1 January 2016.
