Challenge for Tonga's budding film-makers [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Monday, November 23, 2015 - 18:45.  Updated on Monday, November 23, 2015 - 19:00.

Tonga’s budding film-makers will have their ingenuity tested this week in a challenge that will see them creating short films in only two days – and produced ready to be screened to the public at the annual Film Night on Thursday November 26.

The challenge was set by the Mahina Arts Festival committee. Ebonie Fifita, Creative Director, said that to celebrate the most successful films on the night, prizes including underwater digital cameras from Fujifilm and Georges Cameras, will be awarded to eight film makers for their fictional or non fictional works.

“The 2015 Media Committee have set a challenge they say will test the wits, creativity, ingenuity and potential of film makers by giving them only 48 hours to conceptualize, film and edit a film ready for screening to the public by Thursday 26th at the annual events Film Night,” she said.

Organizers say that simple guidelines and rules have been established to encourage film-makers of any capacity with access to any kind of recording and editing devices to participate. It is anticipated that people can create short films using only their phones, digital cameras and similar. Participation is free and open to all.

However, Ebonie said that interested individuals are invited to attend a briefing with the organizing committee before the challenge commences in conjunction with the opening ceremony of the Mahina Arts Festival.

The opening will now merge with the launch of a visual arts exhibition tomorrow, Tuesday, at 7:00pm, at the ArtSpace.

At Thursday’s screening audience applause will award two prizes. Judges include representatives and supporters of various cultural and film initiatives in Tonga. Also featured on the night will be an hour of international short films from Australia, Ireland, France and Tonga.
