Time is up for Peau Vava'u, but future of domestic services undecided [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Thursday, October 27, 2005 - 16:57.  Updated on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 - 16:41.

The thirty days given to Air Peau Vava'’u to shape up its service ends today October 27, confirmed by the Director of Civil Aviation Viliami Ma'’ake yesterday.

The Prime Minister and Minister of Civil Aviation HRH Prince 'Ulukalala Lavaka Ata told the Tongan parliament on September 27 that Tonga will tender its domestic air service for other operators if the monopoly air service of Peau Vava'u does not improve within 30 days.

This is due to the concern that the airline has not been able to service the outer islands of Niuafo'ou and Niuatoputapu.

Viliami said that at present nothing was confirmed on when and whether there would actually be an Opening Day in regards to the tendering out of the domestic air service or whether the tender would just be advertised for the public to know.

A committee has been set up to assess the airline's progress and they report directly to the Minister of Civil Aviation. It was after their assessment that they recommended to give Peau Vava'u a deadline under which they should try and confirm their services.

Viliami said that by next week the committee should have completed their assessment report and recommendations to the Minister of Civil Aviation and then both parties would meet, "but until next week nothing is confirmed ".
