A 58-year-old man died after being hit by a car beside Tufumahina residence at Pea around 10:00pm on Tuesday, 15 September.

Chief Superintendent Tevita Fifita said today the male driver (48) from Tofoa has been charged with two counts of reckless driving causing death and driving under the influence of alcohol.

It is alleged the accused who was driving towards Nuku’alofa had allegedly crashed into a car in front of him. This caused the accused car to swing onto the right side of the road hitting the victim who was walking beside the road.

The victim who suffered serious injuries was pronounced dead upon arrival at Vaiola Hospital, said Fifita.
