A new Clean Green Tonga campaign was launched by Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala on Monday, 31 August in Nuku’alofa.

The campaign endorsed by Cabinet earlier this year formed a National Commission for a Clean and Green Tonga bringing together government, community and church leaders to bring about change.

Deputy Prime Minister and Commission member Hon Siaosi Sovaleni said the campaign represents something important and exciting for Tonga.

"We want to harness all that energy and national pride that cleaned up Tonga for the Coronation. We want that to become part of our everyday, taking care of our homes and public areas, rather than burning and dumping rubbish."

He said they need motiviation from leaders, friends, church communities and family. “The Clean Green Tonga campaign will highlight people in our communities who manage their waste properly and have a green and beautiful garden. They will be our ambassadors for change,” he said.

The campaign will work with three sectors including community groups, schools and businesses. Registered groups will develop action plans that outline how they will make a difference within their communities.

In addition, there will be assistance available for schools and community groups to buy materials such as bins and garden tools.

The Ministry of Environment and the Waste Authority will work with other stakeholders to deliver the program as a collaborative effort.
