A $5 million landing craft Voea Late for His Majesty’s Armed Force being built under Australia’s Pacific Patrol Boat program, was showcased in Newcastle this week.

Shipbuilding company Forgacs hosted Australia’s Rear Admiral Mike Purcell, Head of the Maritime Systems RAN, and Tonga’s Brigadier Fielakepa with Heiss Fonohema second in command naval component at the facility.

Greg Hodge, Forgacs General Manager said the 30.4m steel-hulled vessel had been built at the company’s Carrington shipyard to a design by Sydney designers Incat Crowther.

He said in some areas where these vessels work there are no wharves so the bow opens down to allow vehicles on and off, or cargo can be craned from the side.

The landing craft is expected to be used for transport of military equipment and personnel, amphibious training, disaster relief and emergency towing in Tonga.

It nears completion after a 12-months construction period with final sea trials taking place.

The vessel, which could accommodate six crew in three shared cabins, will soon be delivered to Tonga.
