Father charged with whipping 5 year old daughter [1]

A 40-year-old man has been charged with the assault of his five-year-old daughter who he allegedly whipped with a belt leaving bruises on her back on Sunday, 23 August in Nukunuku, Tongatapu.

Police said today the accused was arrested on Monday, 24 August after pictures of the bruised child circulated on social media leading police to carry out an investigation.

The father was released on bail on Tuesday, 25 August and under the Family Protection Act was ordered not to go anywhere near the child, who has been removed from the home to a safe house.

He is expected to appear at the Magistrate's Court in Nukunuku on Thursday, 27 August.
