Undersea earthquake close to Nuku'alofa [1]

A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 occurred close to Nuku'alofa, at 11.07 p.m. local time last night, but no damage has been reported.

The US Geological Survey world Data Center for Seismology in Denver, Colorado, USA, reported that the earthquake was centred 115 km (75 miles) east north east of Nuku'alofa, and 215 km (135 miles) south of Neiafu.

The location was fixed at 20.572 degrees S, and 175.295 degrees W, in the sea at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).

In Nuku'alofa, people who felt the swaying motion of the earthquake said it lasted for about 30 seconds.
