Car crash at the Royal Palace fence. Vuna Road, 5 June 2015.

Seleti Tupou (30) has been charged with reckless driving after his vehicle crashed  into the fence of the Royal Palace in Nuku'alofa on Friday, 5 June.

The Acting Assistant Police Commissioner Tevita Fifita said today that Police had arrested the accused around midnight on Sunday, 8 June at his home in Sopu.

He has been charged with reckless driving after admitting to causing the crash. He had also admitted to filing a false report on Saturday morning 4 June alleging a stolen vehicle.

Fifita said in an unusual turn of events the accused had made the false report at the Central Police station, claiming his vehicle had been stolen.

Police later on that day received the information from the owner of the vehicle who confirmed the accused had used the vehicle on that day, resulting in the arrest on the same night.

Polices were also grateful to a witness who allegedly saw the crash and the accused when he got out of the vehicle and ran away from the crash site.

The accused has been released on bail.
