Man charged for Lavengatonga shootings [1]

A 58-year-old man has been charged with grievous bodily harm for allegedly shooting and wounding two of his relatives at a plantation in Lavengatonga, Tongatapu, on Friday 29 May.
 
The victims, an 18-year-old boy and 50-year-old man have been treated at Vaiola Hospital and were reported to be in stable condition after receiving gunshot wounds from a .22 rifle, at around 4:00-5:00pm.

The Acting Assistant Police Commissioner Tevita Fififa said today the accused had allegedly shot his brother-in-law on the right knee, and a nephew on his right foot, during a quarrel over mulberry trees that were missing from his plantation.

He said the accused had allegedly first assaulted the boy at his home before taking him in his car to a home and to the plantation. He allegedly later took his brother-in-law to the plantation where the shooting took place.

Police arrested the accused on Friday night with his rifle together with another male co-accused who has been charged with unlawful imprisonment.

The accused is expected to face further charges as police investigation continues. He is a licensed holder of a .22 rifle.

The 50-year-old victim is the brother of the accused's wife. The boy is his a son of his wife’s sister.

Tongan tapa is made from the inner bark of the mulberry tree or hiapo.
