Tonga’s Court of Appeal heard 11 cases this week with judgements to be delivered on Tuesday, March 31 at the Supreme Court in Nuku'alofa.

The session held from March 23-26 was presided over Mr Justice Salmon, Mr Justice Sir Blanchard, Mr Justice Moore and Mr Justice Tupou.

The appeals included six criminal, two civil, one appeal from the Magistrate’s Court and two land cases.

An appeal by Tonga’s former Attorney General John Cauchi vs. a Judicial Appointment and Disciplinary Panel (JADP) was heard.

The Crown appealed against a case regarding Sau’iluma Guttenbeil who received a suspended sentence after being found guilty of manslaughter for the death of her husband after she ran over him with her vehicle in Vava’u in 2012.

Veimau Leone a former Police Inspector who was in charge of the ‘Eua Police also appealed. He was sentenced to one-year imprisonment after being convicted of fraudulent conversion of taking fuel intended for the police vehicle for his own use.

The session also heard an appeal from the Magistrate's Court by the Kele’a Newspaper, Laucala Pohiva and Mateni Tapueluelu against a decision in a case with William Clive Edwards.
