Friday, March 6, 2015 - 21:53

An election petition filed against Samiu Vaipulu the former Deputy Prime Minister and current Vava’u No.15 People’s Representative to Parliament was withdrawn this morning, at the Nuku’alofa Supreme Court.

Hotelier, Tomifa Paea, who filed the petition, appeared before Chief Justice Hon Paulsen and withdrew the petition stating he could not find legal presentation, before the case was discontinued.

He had contested the same constituency as Vaipulu but was unsuccessful during last November's General Election.

In December last year, Paea filed the election petition against Vaipulu claiming that he had committed bribery and corrupt practices during his campaign.

Vaipulu who was represented in court by Clive Edwards, had in his statement of defence denied the allegations of bribery, in particular that the cost of food and lunch for a family and campaign workers as well as allegations of advertising by giving away cigarettes and paying kava fees.

Meanwhile, a separate election petition filed against the Minister of Infrastructure and Vava’u No.15 PR Hon ‘Etuate Lavulavu will be mentioned in court on March 11.

Dr Viliami Latu a former Vava’u PR and ‘Aisea Siliveinusi who filed the petition, claiming bribery and corrupt practices against the Minister are represented by Edwards.

Lavulavu is represented by ‘Ofa Pouono.
