The window of a Tonga Police car was smashed allegedly by students who threw rocks when police arrived to break up two large groups of students who were about to fight at the bus station on Saturday, February 21.
The Acting Assistant Police Commander Tevita Fifita said today they received a report at 12:00pm that a fight was about to take place between two groups of a bout 40 students from Liahona and Tonga College at the bus station in Nuku'alofa.
He said the police sent three vehicles and officers to the scene and immediately separated the groups of students before they confronted each other.
No fight had taken place and noone was injured apart from rocks being thrown at one of the police vehicles, smashing its window, allegedly thrown by the students, he said.
Tevita said the Liahona students who were brought to the Central Police Station were kept there before being released, after the Tonga College boys got on one of the eastern district buses to return home followed by the police.
No arrests or charges were made on Saturday. “We are still investigating to catch those who threw the rocks and hope to make charges this week,” he said.
On the same afternoon, police received a separate report of boys also alleged to be students throwing rocks at one of the buses at Havelu.
“We arrested two boys and have charged them with damaging property. They remain in custody as investigation continues to catch other accused,” he said.
“We ask the parents to please make sure they know where their children are on Saturdays and keep them at home to prevent any fights, because now they are coming in large groups to town,”he said.
