Eco-management plan for Fanga‘uta Lagoon [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Saturday, January 31, 2015 - 11:50.  Updated on Sunday, February 1, 2015 - 00:10.

Fanga‘uta lagoon will undergo eco-management as part of a UN sponsored project to enhance and conserve ecosystems in Tonga.

The project known as the Pacific Island Ridge to Reef National Priorities (or Tonga R2R) aims to restore degraded parts of Fanga’uta Lagoon in the hope of improving the lagoon’s water quality and fish populations.

According to Tonga R2R, the project “is expected to contribute to reducing poverty, sustaining livelihoods and increasing climate resilience.”

A stakeholder meeting was held on Tuesday January 27 to endorse the project. Stakeholders included government, the private sector and NGO’s.
