An off-duty 23-year-old Police Constable was charged for allegedly causing a car crash on Monday night, 15 December on Vuna Road that put two men in hospital.

The Acting Assistant Police Commissioner Tevita Fifita said today the constable is charged with two counts of reckless driving causing grevous bodily harm and driving under the influence of alcohol.

The accused appeared at the Magistrate's Court and was released on bail on Wednesday, 17 December awaiting a court date in January 2015.

Fifita said the accused, who was off duty, was driving his own car when the crash took place at around 11:00pm. He took a breath test and was confirmed to have been under the influence of alcohol.

“We alleged that the accused was speeding down Vuna Road and crashed into a vehicle in front of him causing that vehicle to overturn. The 31-year-old driver and his 40-year-old passenger were injured and rushed to Vaiola Hospital.”

He understood that the driver had been released from hospital, while the passenger remained hospitalised, he said.
