Tonga's Prime Minister Lord Tu’ivakano visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE) last week.

Lord Tu'ivakano, who is also responsible for Tonga's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, met with the UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed.

Tthe UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that on 5 November Lord Tu'ivakano and H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed held discussions over the scope of bilateral cooperation between the two countries, and the latest regional developments between the UAE and the Pacific region. 

Diplomatic relations between the UAE and Tonga have developed over the years, and a $USD4 million 500kWh solar farm  for Vava'u, funded by the UAE was officiated in November last year. 

In this year's Tongan Government annual budget there is an allocation for the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Tonga and the United Arab Emirates.
