One tent down, three standing [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Friday, August 12, 2005 - 18:01.  Updated on Monday, May 12, 2014 - 10:46.

Police pulled down one of the tents at Pangai Si'i this afternoon.

Tonga's striking civil servants left Pangai Si'i this afternoon, after agreeing to disperse at 2 p.m., while waiting for a judicial injunction they are seeking, against an order to leave Pangai Si'i.

The Tonga Public Servants Association legal adviser, Clive Edwards, said that he had asked the Chief Justice Robin Webster to treat the injunction urgently and he was hoping to be able to see the Chief Justice either tonight or early tomorrow morning, because the court house had been closed by the strike.

The injunction is sought against a Cabinet order for them to leave the area.

The final announcement by Fotu Fisi'iahi before the strikers left Pangai Si'i at 2 pm, was for them to meet by the side of the road tomorrow at 8.30 a.m.

As the strikers were leaving, the police moved in and started dismantling the tents. After the first tent was pulled down, some one shouted out to leave the rest of the tents, "because we may have to put them back up tomorrow!"

So by the end of the day one tent was down and three were still standing.
