Tonga's civil servants decide to continue strike [1]

Nuku'alofa, Tonga

Wednesday, August 10, 2005 - 19:45.  Updated on Thursday, September 5, 2013 - 18:00.

After meeting at 5 p.m. today to consider King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV's response to their Petition, the PSA decided they were not encouraged to go back to work by the king's command for an independent audit on the salary rise.

Meanwhile, the thousands of striking civil servants have refused to move from their rallying point at Pangai Si'‘i after being ordered to do so by Cabinet on August 8. They say they are appealing the order to move from the central Nuku'alofa site they have occupied for the past fortnight.

The order came as a big surprise to the Public Servants Association who say they have constantly maintained an acceptable code of conduct at Pangai Si'i since they made it their rallying point on July 22.

Vuna Fa...’otusia, the Secretary of PSA, said that they had submitted a Letter of Appeal today to the Minister of Lands, Hon. Fielakepa, for its referral to Cabinet later this week to reconsider the removal order.

He said that until a decision is passed from Cabinet on their appeal, the committee had no intention of finding another rallying location for the civil servants strike and they would continue to gather at Pangai Si‘’i this week.

Vuna said that the Interim Committee would meet at 5:00pm today, Wednesday, to look at their strategies for this week.

In the meantime the scene at Pangai Si‘’i this afternoon after the announcement of the king's response was made the gathering were dancing happily to music played by their DJ with a free barbeque roasting on the side for anyone to enjoy.
